“Tutas Lietas” has grown from a beloved Latvian children’s series into a broad entertainment and educational brand. Its content reaches 2.4 million monthly YouTube views, more than 50,000 subscribers, and over 30,000 concert visitors annually, alongside distribution through Latvia’s leading broadcasters.
Together, Ausma Media and Cube set out to bring this trusted world into a dedicated mobile experience—combining videos, music, and educational play in one safe, child-friendly environment.
The challenge
Until now, the brand’s digital content was distributed across third-party platforms. While these channels provided reach, they could not offer the controlled, coherent experience that young children and their parents need.
The challenge was to define a product for two very different audiences: children aged 2–8, who need an intuitive and playful interface, and parents, who expect safety, transparency, and control over screen time.
Key questions included:
- What should the streaming experience look like?
- Which games would be engaging as well as educational?
- How should child and parent profiles work together?
- How could children use the app before they can read?
- How could the platform support future localization and monetization?
The approach
The project began by translating the values of “Tutas Lietas” into a clear digital product concept. The team explored the needs of children and parents, developed the app’s structure and visual language, and tested early solutions with real families.
Special attention was given to interaction patterns suitable for young children: large touch targets, simple navigation, recognizable characters, minimal reliance on written instructions, and immediate visual and audio feedback.
The result is an experience that feels like a natural extension of the “Tutas Lietas” universe rather than a conventional streaming platform with a children’s theme applied to it.
The solution
The app brings together episodes from “Tutas Lietas,” “Ukulele,” and “Īkšķi Tīkšķi,” popular songs, and a growing collection of educational games.
Children can explore activities that develop language, early literacy, imagination, creativity, rhythm, counting, logic, and even basic cooking skills. Familiar characters guide them through experiences ranging from letter and word games to musical challenges, puzzles, train-track building, and playful cooking.
For parents, the app provides:
- A fully controlled environment without recommendation algorithms or unexpected content
- Individual child profiles and saved game progress
- Screen-time management
- Offline access
- Age-appropriate Latvian-language content in one place
The outcome
The project transforms “Tutas Lietas” from content consumed through separate channels into an owned digital ecosystem. It strengthens the relationship between the brand and its audience while giving parents a safer alternative to open video platforms.
Most importantly, the app demonstrates that screen time for young children can be thoughtful, culturally relevant, and genuinely engaging—bringing trusted Latvian stories, songs, and learning experiences together in a world children already love.
