User Experience (UX) and Service Design

Handwave is the world's first biometric wallet with a mission to make in-store payments as natural as waving your hand. It combines payment, loyalty activation and age verification in one wireless move — no phone, wallet, card or PIN.

We joined the Handwave team to design the user experience in two critically important places: the mobile app and the palm scanner screen at the checkout. Our challenge was to create a UI and UX that works in “checkout mode” — fast, understandable, and stress-free, while giving users a sense of security and control over biometric data. In addition, it was necessary to achieve that the whole process was intuitive at first glance and understandable in less than 4 seconds.

We developed a unified design concept for both interfaces so that the app setup flow and scanner interaction form one continuous story. In the app, the focus was on clear steps (registration, wrist scanning, attracting payments and loyalty), understandable statuses, and friendly language that allays biometrics concerns. In turn, on the scanner screen, we simplified everything to the most essential: palm positioning prompts, clear process feedback and understandable signals that help the user do the right thing even if he does not look at the screen for more than a moment.
